There are two main Constitutional interpretations:
Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton is a federalist. He supports a loose interpretation o the Constitution. He believes that creating a national bank is the best option for our country. He believes that the government should be allowed to use the elastic clause. Elastic clause is a statement in the United States Constitution granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the enumerated list of powers. He believes that educated aristocrats should have more power. From Hamilton's perspective, central power is more important than the colonists' individual liberty. He supported states' rights to representation in the form of a Senate, but his interpretaion allows the central government more power than the states.
Alexander Hamilton “The proposed Constitution, so far from implying an abolition of the State governments, makes them constituent parts of the national sovereignty, by allowing them a direct representation inthe Senate, and leaves in their possession certain exclusive and very important portions of sovereign power. This fully corresponds, in every rational import of the terms, with the idea of a federal government.” -Alexander Hamilton
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson has the opposite beliefs. He is a part of a party called Democratic-Republicans. He believes that the states should pay off their own debt and there should not be a national bank. He supports what is called a strict interpretation of the Constitution because otherwise the federal government may have unlimited power. He believes that the states should have more political power than the federal government. Jefferson's interpretation gives the states more power and allows them to make more of their own decisions.
Thomas Jefferson
“A government big enough to supply you with everything you need is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.... The course of history shows that as the government grows, liberty decreases.” - Thomas Jefferson
